Process up to 200 images per job — pick your settings once, run them all.
Drop a photo, drag the square crop window over what you want to keep, click crop. Output is a perfect 1:1 square — Instagram feed-ready, profile-picture friendly. Default output is 1080×1080 (Instagram's recommended size); pick any other dimension before exporting.
Why square crop is its own tool
Instagram, profile pictures on most platforms, app icons, album covers — square is everywhere. The hard part isn't cropping; it's deciding what stays and what doesn't when you go from a 16:9 or 4:3 photo to 1:1. Faces shouldn't get cut off, the subject should sit in the visible area, important context shouldn't be lost.
You can do this manually in any image editor, but a dedicated tool with a draggable crop frame and instant preview is faster than firing up Photoshop. Our Smart Crop tool can do this AI-automatically; this tool gives you manual control.
How to square-crop a photo
- Drop your photo. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC. Up to 50 MP free.
- Drag the square frame over the area you want to keep. The frame stays square; you can resize it but not change the aspect.
- Pick output size. 1080 (Instagram), 1200 (high-res), 800 (web), 400 (avatar), or any custom value.
- Download. Output is a JPG (or PNG if input was PNG). Original file isn't modified.
When manual crop beats smart crop
Smart Crop is great when there's an obvious subject the AI can detect — a face, a product, a single animal. Manual square crop wins when:
- The composition is intentionally minimalist with negative space the AI would crop away
- You want to highlight a specific area that isn't the obvious subject
- The photo has multiple subjects and you want to pick which one stays
- You want a tighter crop than the AI would default to
For batch square cropping where you're willing to let the AI choose, Smart Crop saves time. For one-off perfect crops, manual is faster.
Output size recommendations
Instagram feed: 1080×1080 (their recommended max). Smaller works but they upscale during display.
Profile pictures: 400×400 minimum, 800×800 recommended. Most platforms cap display at 200px so anything above 800 is overkill.
App icons: generate at 1024×1024 then run through our App Icon Generator to produce every required size for iOS + Android.
Album / playlist covers: 3000×3000 (Apple Music spec) or 1400×1400 (Spotify minimum).
Frequently asked questions
Can I change the aspect ratio?
No — this tool is square only. For other aspect ratios use our Aspect Ratio Cropper or Smart Crop.
What's the default output size?
1080×1080 — Instagram's recommended max. You can pick any size before exporting.
Is quality preserved?

Can I crop a folder of photos at once?
Use our Batch Resize tool with a 1:1 aspect setting for batch square cropping.
Does it work with HEIC?
Yes — iPhone HEIC photos work the same as JPG/PNG.
How many crops per day?
Anonymous: 3/day. Free signed-in: 20/day. Premium: 200/day.
Will EXIF be preserved?
Yes by default. Strip with our EXIF Stripper if you'll share publicly.
